Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye Visited the “Darkhan Dala” Village

Dr. Serdar Çam, Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye, together with his official delegation, visited the yurts set up along the Caspian coast and witnessed the shared cultural heritage of Turkic-speaking peoples. They first explored the Kazakh traditions in the “Suun Aighyr” village. Artists from the Mangystau district warmly welcomed the esteemed guest and impressed the Turkish delegation with their performances.“Our cultures are shared. In the past, we learned about all the traditions here and brought them to Anatolia. Now we are learning new things and witnessing long-forgotten customs. For example, in front of a yurt, we saw the traditional Kazakh ceremony of cutting a child’s tethers (tusau kesu). If fate allows, we’ll try to revive and practice this tradition ourselves,” said Dr. Serdar Çam, Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye.Afterward, the delegation closely observed the works of artisans from Turkic-speaking nations in the “Craftsmen’s Village.” Dr. Serdar Çam expressed his joy at visiting Mangystau, the ancestral land of the Turkic peoples.“We feel truly happy, as we are standing on our ancestral land. We are in the beautiful city of Aktau, which has developed both tourism and culture. Mangystau is a region where our shared culture has been preserved in its purest form. The presence of a seaport in this city boosts its economic recognition. I am confident that Aktau’s status will rise after this festive event. We are gathered in a city that holds great significance for the Turkic world. We are deeply experiencing the history we share as the Turkic world,” said Dr. Serdar Çam.Official representatives from countries united by a common history and culture were in high spirits during the gathering of Turkic-speaking peoples. They showed great respect for the art and culture that emphasized shared values.“I wish unity, brotherhood, and a strong foundation for the Turkic world’s history, and its continuation into the future. It is very important for our younger generation to know the history of Turkic-speaking peoples,” said Dr. Serdar Çam, Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye.

TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev Congratulates the People

Today, April 5, the official opening ceremony of "Aktau – The Cultural Capital of the Turkic World" took place in Aktau. The Secretary General of the International Organization TURKSOY, Sultan Raev, attended the event to personally congratulate the city’s residents and guests on this prestigious title, sharing his warm wishes with the audience."We are honored to witness the grand opening of Aktau as 'The Cultural Capital of the Turkic World'! Kazakhstan, a land that has revived its national traditions and cultural heritage, is now fulfilling the noble aspirations of the Alash intellectuals. It is a nation that has reclaimed its historical legacy, strengthened its sovereignty, and earned global recognition. Today, Kazakhstan stands as a powerful country with a strong national identity, a stable political system, and a distinguished reputation on the international stage. It is the shining star of Central Asia and the entire Turkic world. The Kazakh people are a nation united in harmony, with a young generation striving for progress. The world acknowledges and respects Kazakhstan as a leading and influential state," Sultan Raev declared in his opening remarks.Honoring Mangystau’s HeritageThe Secretary General highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the Mangystau region:"Mangystau has given the world great figures such as Kashagan, Abyl, Sugir, and the revered Abish Kekilbayev, as well as countless heroic warriors. The sacred land of Otpan Tau, the golden heart of Mangystau, has witnessed the footsteps of our ancestors and the hooves of their horses. It was here that great leaders and warriors gathered to make crucial decisions for their people. The legendary Abish Kekilbayev, born in this very land, became not only a literary giant of Kazakhstan but also an esteemed figure in the entire Turkic world. In his novel 'The End of the Legend,' he explored the significance of lineage in national identity, warning that the loss of cultural roots leads to alienation. This concept was later deepened and expanded by the renowned writer Chingiz Aitmatov, leaving a profound impact on readers worldwide,"* he noted.Cultural Milestones and Future PlansSultan Raev also emphasized that this year marks the 275th anniversary of Pir Beket Ata Myrzagululy, and this milestone will be appropriately celebrated within the framework of the "Aktau – The Cultural Capital of the Turkic World" program.Additionally, he announced that TURKSOY would publish a Turkish translation of the works of Serikbol Kondybay, a prominent scholar who made significant contributions to the study of Kazakh mythology. This book will be released in Turkey under the auspices of TURKSOY.Why Aktau Was Chosen as the Cultural CapitalSultan Raev underscored that TURKSOY's decision to name Aktau as the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World for 2025 was far from arbitrary:"This year, Aktau will become a true center of Turkic culture, where our brotherly nations will strengthen their cultural and literary ties, exchange traditions, and deepen their mutual understanding. Throughout 2025, the world will witness a series of grand events as part of TURKSOY’s 'Cultural Capital of the Turkic World' initiative. We are confident that this will be an unforgettable year of cultural unity and celebration!" he expressed with great optimism.

As part of the grand opening of "Aktau – The Cultural Capital of the Turkic World", large-scale events are taking place in the regional center. One of the highlights is "Batyrlar Auyly" (Village of Warriors), set up in the amphitheater square and organized by the Beineu district.Among the distinguished participants are representatives of the renowned Zhanar sewing studio, who have traveled to Aktau to showcase their exquisite national attire. Beyond serving local clients, she has seen a growing demand for her products from all corners of Kazakhstan through social media. Remarkably, her handcrafted garments have also reached customers as far as the United States, Russia, and even Norway, where warm clothing is a necessity."I primarily use merino wool to create national garments, all of which are handmade. Every piece is produced in Beineu, where I run the 'Zhanar' sewing studio. We also offer training opportunities and, through the local career center, provide employment for seven people, including individuals with disabilities," Mendikulova shared during the cultural event in Aktau. Now in her fifties, she has become an inspiration to many, skillfully transforming fabric and thread into beautifully crafted clothing. Over the past decade, she has employed more than ten people in her community."Just recently, I hired a hearing-impaired girl through a government subsidy program. I’ve been in this industry since 2014, though my professional journey began much earlier. From 1987 to 1991, I worked as a physical education teacher and basketball coach. After Kazakhstan gained independence, I pursued an accounting degree and worked in finance for 16 years. Eleven years ago, I shifted to sewing—and I have never regretted it. Mastering three completely different professions has shown me that with determination, any skill can be learned and turned into success," Zhanar said. She views "Aktau – The Cultural Capital of the Turkic World" as an incredible opportunity, as it allows international visitors to admire and purchase her unique, high-quality designs.
